Sugar and Syrup…

I had mentioned in my last post that we just kicked off Maple Season here in the Pioneer Valley – one of my favorite traditions as a lifelong New Englander, but even more so now that I’ve been living right on the border of states like Vermont and New Hampshire for the past few years. That means that I have unlimited access to so many great, local sugar houses, shacks and farms – and I try to visit a different one each year to test their products and sample their food!

Sometimes, however – it’s nice to stick with something familiar – and this past weekend Dan and I made plans to visit Davenport Maple Farm in Shelburne Falls for breakfast and to take in the scenery on what ended up being a beautiful, slightly warmer than expected Winter morning. I’d first written about Davenport back in 2022 when I’d last stopped for a pancake breakfast on my own – and it’s remained largely unchanged since then.

The restaurant is still bustling as ever (you have to get there when they first open or right before pre-brunch rush starts in the mid-morning!), you can still check out their boiler to see exactly how their famous maple syrup is made, and they still have plenty of animals you can visit before or after you’ve had your meal – although there was a new, very friendly and curious baby cow there this year that had everyone excited!

I opted for the mixed berry waffle with bacon this time around and was not disappointed, while Dan tried the Finnish Pancakes (I had a bite – and they were divine!) It was such a nice way to start the day, and the weekend, before we headed further into town to grab lattes and ran into some friends and before I embarked on a series of errands in preparation for what has been a very busy week so far!

A little later on this week, I’ll be sharing another “Local Loves” installment – although there’s the possibility it may be a “Not-So-Local-Love” version since I’m driving to Canada and back tonight!

We’ll just have to wait and see what makes the cut!

’til then!
