“Over the River and Through the Woods…”

The days leading up to some extended out-of-state travel are a mix of both excitement and stress. I’m so looking forward to seeing family and celebrating birthdays, milestones, etc. but then there’s packing, and making sure my bank knows where I’ll be in case I use my card, and finding parking near the airport, so on, and so on.

I’m leaving for Maryland tomorrow morning for a few days to visit Andrew and the kids, who I haven’t seen since last October when we were all in D.C. together for a show and some sightseeing. I’ve nearly finished arranging my suitcase with my clothes and the gifts I’ve picked up for everyone- but double and triple checking all the things can be a bit daunting!

But I’ve recently taken some time to relax pre-flight (which is shockingly not a red eye- as is my usual tradition!) and enjoy some great food in a new location that came via recommendation by my brother, sister-in-law and niece. A few days ago, I finally made a trip to Mason, New Hampshire to enjoy a five-course lunch at the famous and cherished Pickity Place.

Built in 1786, this former cottage turned-museum and restaurant is best known for being the location that inspired illustrator Elizabeth Orton Jones when she drew the pictures for the 1948 version of ‘Little Red Riding Hood,’ and it’s easy to see why. The building sits at the end of a winding dirt road in the woods and is surrounded by trees, ivy and flowers, and the inside is quaint and cozy- giving it that true, authentic “grandmother’s house” feel.

The menu at Pickity Place changes monthly (and you can view it on their website) and visitors get their choice of one of two entrées- but everything is prepared fresh using fruits and vegetables grown on the property- which has been extended to include an explorable herb shop and greenhouse.

It was delicious, maybe one of the most impressive and satisfying meals I’ve had in recent memory- and I cannot wait to go back. I’m thinking I may make a reservation so my mom and my cousin Paige can check it out, too! Every once in a while we get together to go out for lunch, do some shopping and enjoy the overall splendor of New England life- so this place would be perfect for them!

I’ll be back next week to check in from Maryland, and I’m looking forward to sharing all my photos and adventures while I catch up with the kids!
