When ‘Barbiecore’ (see: all things hot pink) was all the rage last year- and was a trend I fully embraced and appreciated because it was just so much fun– I thought for sure that the inspired-hue would eventually be announced as Pantone’s 2023 ‘Color of The Year’. If not hot pink, I figured- then something very close to it. So near the end of 2022, when Pantone finally made their announcement- I was pleasantly surprised to see I wasn’t too far off with my prediction- and that the Color of The Year for 2023 was a shade I’ve already incorporated a lot into my wardrobe, accessories, and makeup over the years.
While I was very fond of 2022’s ‘Veri Peri’ periwinkle phenomenon, I’m ready to jump right into 2023’s ‘Color of The Year’- 18-1750 – ‘Viva Magenta!’
From PANTONE’S WEBSITE:
Pantone’s Color of the Year, Viva Magenta 18-1750, vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.
This year’s Color of the Year is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all. “
In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.
Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.
I can definitely get behind this choice! I think Magenta is absolutely gorgeous, and to commemorate and celebrate the color- I recently wore this velvet magenta dress from Nine West out and about around town. With long, puffy sleeves and a sash tie around the waist- I felt bright, bold and warm all day. I’ve also been wearing this magenta and berry-hued choker from Napier to work, out running errands, grabbing drinks with friends, etc. It’s the perfect Pantone-themed accessory to wear on the days when I’m not sporting high-collared blouses or turtlenecks.
And in preparation for this post, you know I had to get the “Magenta Mani”, too! The shade pictured is a dip powder color via my regular salon, but it’s very similar to the shade ‘Dakota’ by ILNP.
I’m looking forward to sharing more magenta pieces as the year progresses, especially in the warmer months since it’s such an appropriate and fiery color for the Spring & Summer.
If you’re celebrating 18-1750 – ‘Viva Magenta!’ this year, feel free to leave a comment or drop me a line with to share your pieces, products or recommendations on ways to incorporate the color into everyday wear!
