An inside joke among my group of girlfriends, specifically as it relates to the last two Summer trips we’ve all taken to Cape Cod together, is that we are all served portions of piping hot savory pies upon our arrival to our shared cottage – an older and historic house that notoriously takes a little bit of time to cool down once we’re all settled in and have both fans and air conditioning running consistently throughout the rooms. To this day, we all still catch ourselves quoting my friend Stef the first time she found out we were having pot pies for lunch during our first year in West Dennis – “Gravy?! It’s eighty degrees outside!”
Those pies, of course, come from Marion’s Pie Shop just down the road in Chatham, and it’s our friend Alyssa who is usually the one buying them in bulk the morning of our arrival. Marion’s has been around since 1947, and their adorable little storefront is located directly next to the house/residence where it all began so many years ago when Marion Matheson used to sell chicken pot pies outside of her kitchen window to hungry locals.
Since then, new owners have taken over Marion’s but have successfully managed to maintain the bakery’s charm and beloved recipes that go beyond just standard meat and fruit pies – and include things like pasta dishes, seafood, soups, pastries, etc. They’re open year-round and every day except for Mondays.
When telling my mom about Marion’s shortly after my return from this most recent trip with the girls, she remarked that she’d love to check it out someday – so I thought why not just go there again this past weekend since I had my Saturday all freed up?
I picked her up at the crack of dawn and we headed down to Cape Cod to beat the traffic, arriving at Marion’s shortly after they opened. We grabbed a chicken pot pie and one of their seafood pies (which always sell out SO fast!), storing them in an ice-packed cooler we’d brought along with us before making a couple more stops in the area and then ultimately heading back home to try a couple of slices for lunch.
And when I say that we both agreed it was absolutely and 100% worth the drive and the very early morning alarm – we really meant it. The seafood pie had so much lobster meat, scallops, and shrimp stuffed into it that it was insane!
My mom has already proposed we get some pies from Marion’s for Thanksgiving, which I am more than happy to do since I love spending any amount of time on the Cape and their cranberry-apple pie sounds/looks incredible – but I also love a good mac and cheese, which they also serve – so I have a feeling Marion’s will be catering most of the holiday season for my family this year!
