A fun little fact about me that not many people know- I can surf. Please note, I didn’t say I can surf well (not by a long shot) but I’m able to occasionally stand up on a board and can ride a little wave without injuring myself. I’ve never had the opportunity to try bigger, Oahu North Shore waves- maybe someday!- but it’s a fun part-time Summertime hobby I enjoy.
When I first decided to give surfing a try, it was years ago and I was up by Hampton Beach during a long weekend. I had been in Southern California a week or two before that, and had spent a good amount of time at Ocean Beach watching the surfers from the pier while I tried to work on my tan. I felt inspired.
There had always been a vibrantly colored seaside shop I’d pass by while en route to the boardwalk in Hampton- with surfboards stacked up high around the entrance- and I decided to stop by to finally check it out. That shop was Cinnamon Rainbows Surf Co., and it quickly became one of my favorite places to visit whenever I was in New Hampshire and cruising the coast.
Cinnamon Rainbows don’t just sell surfboards, gear, and really cute bikinis/beach clothing or my favorite line of Summer skin/hair care products (Sun Bum!) but they also offer lessons and rentals for all skill levels, too. Whether you’re just beginning or are a seasoned professional looking to brush up on your know-how- they offer group and one-on-one lessons throughout the Summer. It’s how I learned the basics- and the process was fun, engaging and safe.
I happened to be passing through New Hampshire this past weekend and stopped by to stock up on some shampoo and conditioner (I ended up with some new clothes too, of course!) and hit the beach for a while. Although the amount of people crowding the ocean without masks on was definitely alarming- I managed to find a spot to myself for a little while before it got cloudy, cold and started to rain rather unexpectedly.
Given the ongoing COVID-19 situation, surfing lessons with Cinnamon Rainbows are postponed- but I’m hoping to go back again for another session when it’s safe to do so. I’ve got Hawaii on my travel bucket list and I want to be prepared for the waves when I get there.
