OOTD: Sandlot Summer

I’d recently seen a conversation on social media where women were talking about foregoing things like “Hot Girl Summer” or “Brat Summer” (or any other previous Summer aesthetics) in favor of fully participating in “Sandlot Summer” this year. The concept was/is a simple one – dress super comfortable and casual, and fully immerse yourself in Summertime traditions from your childhood, i.e. drive-in movies, regular trips to the amusement park or arcade, and supporting your local hot dog stand or ice cream shop as much as you can.

Since I do a lot of those things during the Summer season, anyway – I knew this was the aesthetic for me to truly embrace this time around.

And nothing said that more than my most recent “afternoon off” ensemble from a few days ago when Dan and I stopped by Two Ghosts Vinyl Café in Turners Falls to grab coffee, catch up, and listen to some records – another childhood tradition of mine that has gotten harder and harder to enjoy with the rapid disappearance of record shops over the years. Two Ghosts is an actual gem in my community that must be protected at all costs.

I digress. I’ve had friends occasionally tease me about these high-waist, cropped jeans I’ve had for a couple of years now. One of my friends affectionately refers to them as “Mom Jeans” since they don’t accentuate my frame all that much, but they are by far one of the comfiest pairs of pants I own – and when I just want to be able to move around freely on days when I’m running errands, doing any kind of physical labor, or just want to enjoy a lavender matcha and listen to an old Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds record with a friend – I’m wearing these.

And I keep then simple by not accessorizing too much. Tank tops, graphic shirts or band tees, a beanie or baseball hat, and sneakers or flip flops. Nothing too fancy – just super casual. In this instance, I threw on my old Red Sox cap since my hair was a little unruly because of the humidity that day, and it was easier to just tuck it under the brim than let it fly around everywhere.

In looking at these photos, I feel like they truly captured my own “Sandlot Summer” look. I dressed like this a lot when I was a kid and spent most of my childhood Summers at the beach, playing Skee-Ball at the arcade, riding bikes everywhere with my friends or reading comic books in the treehouse our group haphazardly constructed together in the woods when we were ten years old. So many good memories! This is absolutely a trend/aesthetic I can get behind this season!

Next week, I’ll have a recap of what I got up to during this coming weekend – including trips to New Hampshire and a local farm! – another installment of “Local Loves”, and a couple of other surprises, too.

See you all then!
