Bisque-ing in the Glow…

When it comes to celebrating my mom for Mother’s Day, she’s pretty laid-back and chill about plans. All three of her children are grown, and while one of my brothers has been living in Florida for a couple of years now, my other brother and I are still within a reasonable driving distance to see her with some regularity and to be able to assist her with things around her house and/or yard if needed.

That being said, she’s so appreciative of something as small and simple as a phone call or a visit on a day dedicated to her and other moms/moms-to-be around the world – but will never say no to a nice meal in an unfamiliar location since, much like me, she loves venturing out to new places and trying new dishes. She also loves seafood, which gave me an idea of where to bring her yesterday afternoon for a lunch together, just us girls.

I’d seen Ford’s Black & Blue, located in Groton, Connecticut – all over social media in the weeks leading up to Mother’s Day. Nestled near Spicer’s Marina off of West Cove, this steakhouse and seafood establishment is famous for their “Lobster Bomb” – a bread bowl filled with a half pound of lobster meat and covered with warm lobster bisque alongside a side of crispy fries.

I made a reservation without telling my mom where we were going – only letting her know what time to be ready by so I could pick her up and we could be on our way. Although the weather was touch and go – cloudy and foggy one minute and sunny and humid the next – the drive to Groton was beautiful and scenic since I opted to take the back roads to/from her house.

Ford’s Black & Blue had a really cool and relaxed feel, with a lot of nautical décor I was obsessed with – and despite how busy it was when we’d arrived – the staff were very friendly and attentive. We both ordered the “Lobster Bomb” and they were incredible. Not only were they huge, but there was no shortage of fresh, buttery lobster meat crammed into them. The bisque was also delicious, and served as an unexpectedly tasty dipping sauce for the fries (which inspired an appetizer recipe I may try in the coming weeks!)

My mom was so surprised and so happy that she’s already talking about going back for a “Just Because” dinner together during the Summer – which I am all too enthusiastic to do!

I’d really love to explore more parts of Coastal Connecticut in the warmer weather since the nearby towns and businesses we drove through and past were all so charming and cute. I have a feeling I’ll be doing some research soon to plan a proper weekend away.

I hope everyone who celebrated Mother’s Day yesterday had an absolutely lovely day with the moms in their lives. I know I did. My mom is the best, and in a couple of days I’ll be sharing a Summer-inspired dessert recipe I whipped up alongside her once we’d returned to her house after our main meal!
