Hello from Swarthmore, Pennsylvania! I’m on day two of three of a mini-vacation/road trip I embarked on yesterday morning to meet up with longtime friends and see one of my favorite bands perform at the first music festival I’ve been able to attend since 2019 and long before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Firefly Festival is taking place in Dover, Delaware through this weekend- and sort of on a whim- Andrew and I decided we were both going to go to today/tonight’s show so that we could watch The Killers headline. There are other incredible artists on today’s lineup, of course- and the overall festival boasts some impressive acts (like Billie Eilish, Tame Impala, Phoebe Bridgers and Cage The Elephant- just to name a few!) and I’m excited to experience live music again in a new venue/location I’ve never been to before.
Given that hotel rooms in the Dover area were astronomically priced because of the festival, I opted to stay about 45-60 minutes away from the venue in the small town of Swarthmore, resting and regrouping at the beautiful and conveniently located Inn at Swarthmore– which is just steps away from the Swarthmore College campus and downtown area.
The drive here yesterday was long, but mostly picturesque and peaceful- especially through small towns along Route 209 like Milford and Stroudsburg. I did have to navigate through a pretty intense thunderstorm, though- with torrential downpours and poor visibility- but the skies had thankfully cleared up by the time I made it to my hotel and it’s looking like the weather is going to stay warm and sunny for the remainder of my trip.
There are a few farm stands and orchards I plan on visiting on my way back to Massachusetts late Saturday afternoon- places I’d passed while driving into Pennsylvania that had looked super cute and seasonal- and I think it’ll be the perfect way to close out what has been shaping up to be a really fun, spur-of-the-moment long weekend so far.
