The tradition every Memorial Day Weekend- for as long as I can remember- consisted of at least one cookout and at least one trip to the beach to “jump start” the Summer season with friends and family. Of course, this year things are a little different- what with social distancing, mandatory face coverings, and limited capacity congregations. I simply cannot just go to crowded boardwalks or BBQs for the time being- and had to improvise with a smaller scaled celebration to commemorate the three-day weekend and toast to warmer, sunnier days ahead.
I recently packed up the last of my Fall/Winter clothes and accessories- sweaters, boots, scarves, etc.- to keep in storage for the next few months now that we’ve had consistently warmer days over the past few weeks- while simultaneously unpacking my Spring/Summer clothes to clean, freshen up, and hang in my closet. It’s been a fun rotation- with a few new additions added in, of course.
I picked up this comfy cotton “SOCIAL DISTANCING EXPERT” t-shirt through Etsy not too long after quarantine first began- part of a series of cabin fever-induced online purchases I made to keep myself entertained- and it seemed like just as good a time as any to wear it out and about with a pair of cropped skinny jeans and some low-top sea foam-colored sneakers.
And while I typically wear sundresses or rompers during my Memorial Day festivities- it felt more casual and laid-back to just wear these basics while I grilled up some food to share with my mom- who I got to see this past weekend during our bi-weekly visit after a 14 day quarantine.
I had a couple of drinks (yes, I’m holding a White Claw. I’m a walking stereotype,) with my hot dog, coleslaw and corn on the cob while lounging in my mom’s backyard and playing some upbeat music on my phone. It wasn’t as big or as loud as other Summertime parties have been in the past- but it was still nice and much-needed after a long couple of weeks of working remotely and in isolation in the Pioneer Valley.
Today will be another sunny day consisting of lounging and cooking up some cheeseburgers before it’s time to head back home and get ready for work tomorrow- but I’m feeling much more relaxed and excited to have some new closet favorites to share in the weeks ahead.
