Local Loves: Howard’s Drive-In

While there are many, many, many different road and seaside shacks in and around New England that offer plentiful servings of fried seafood, burgers, and/or ice cream – they are not all created equal – and over the years I’ve definitely stayed loyal to a few of my favorites. That’s not to say I won’t try a new place (I love being introduced to and/or discovering new eateries in the Northeast!) but I know where I usually go when I’m in the mood for something specific and how to get there quickly.

Howard’s Drive-In, located in West Brookfield, Massachusetts is a popular Summertime spot that has been serving juicy burgers and gigantic scoops of ice cream since 1947, but their menu has long since expended to include a number of seafood selections, chicken options, grilled cheeses and sides. They also offer slushies, milkshakes and sundaes if you’re looking for something a little more complex than a soft-serve twisty cone.

And while everything is always delicious and their service is fast and efficient – it’s the reasonable prices that always keep me coming back when I want fish & chips or clam strips. For as huge as their portions are – buying a meal or a sweet treat here will not break the bank.

I brought my mom and Oliver by Howard’s for our first visit of the season a few days ago while I was visiting, and even after we’d ordered a bunch of seafood, sides and ice cream – we’d paid less than $50. That’s not bad considering in many places a lobster roll will set you back $30 – $40. We even had plenty of leftovers to take back to her house for lunch in the following day(s!)

Howard’s is open daily from now through the Fall, and the parking lot and picnic areas can fill up fast. My recommendation is to get there early, or in-between the lunch and dinner/post-dinner ice cream rushes, preferably in the mid-afternoons if you don’t want to wait in line – or if you want to find a spot to park and eat – but it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area!
