Not-So-Local-Loves: Madonna Inn

Last week, when winding down my recap of my time in Northern California and the Redwoods, I had mentioned that Troy had a surprise for me during our long drive back to Orange County – a place that was so unique and cool that it deserved it’s own post – and here we are! After hearing me talk about wanting to see it in person for ages, my beloved booked us an overnight stay at the famous Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, California!

First envisioned and constructed in 1958 by construction magnate and entrepreneur, Alex Madonna, the Madonna Inn’s colorful common areas like their steakhouse and cocktail lounge, and uniquely-themed guest rooms quickly became a tourist sensation and has since grown to over 100 units available for rent. The hotel features an elaborate wine cellar, a nearby horse ranch and trails, a heated beach-entry pool, a renowned spa and plenty of shops!

Troy had gotten us the “Misty Rock” room, which was cave-themed and featured a waterfall shower and rocks all around our bed. It was wild, and we fell asleep watching old movies after walking around and exploring the property after-dark when we checked in.

The next morning, we got to see the splendor of the Madonna Inn in all of it’s pink, floral glory – most of which has remained unchanged since the hotel was first built – including enjoying a delicious breakfast at their Copper Café, buying souvenirs (and checking out some of their designer clothing for sale!) and savoring an extended dip in their pool, which was absolutely amazing. I could have stayed swimming in there for hours if we didn’t have the drive back to Troy’s apartment ahead of us! The water was perfect!

I snapped so many photos, and am so appreciative of the staff who pointed us in the direction of things we shouldn’t miss – like their stained glass windows and wine-themed chandelier heading down to the cellar. Everyone was so friendly and fun, and it’s easy to see why the Madonna Inn attracts so many people who want a piece of 1950s/1960s-era eccentricity. It’s such a cool place!

The inn also hosts so many events like weddings, birthdays and banquets – and I told Troy I wanted to plan my next big milestone birthday celebration there. I know my girlfriends back home would absolutely love the place!

And of course, I’m so thankful to Troy for such a wonderful surprise. He knew how happy this stay would make me and made it a reality without any hesitation whatsoever. He’s truly the best.

I can’t wait to go back again!
