With Hurricane Debby recently making landfall and causing a significant amount of rain here in the Northeast, my girlfriends and I were carefully monitoring this past weekend’s forecast and frantically trying to arrange a backup plan in case our long-scheduled boating excursion off the coast of Ogunquit, Maine fell through due to choppy waters and/or stormy skies.
On Saturday morning, however, the sky had cleared and the sun was shining brightly – and we giddily made the nearly two hour drive North after playing a game of musical cars and then musical seats as we all ultimately climbed into our friend Alyssa’s SUV for the day. With snacks, sunscreen, and some champagne packed carefully, we were on our way!
All six of us had kicked in to rent a sailboat and an experienced captain for a couple of hours via Silverlining Sailing, where we got to enjoy a scenic cruise, have a few drinks, share some stories and catch up with one another. It was absolutely incredible, and I don’t think the photos I managed to take amid the brightness of the sun (and drinking just a little bit too much bubbly!) do it justice. I would absolutely and happily rent the sailboat again someday! Thank you so much to Captain Jack for telling us stories from the sea and keeping us safe throughout our journey.
Once back on land, we headed across the street on the dock for a seafood dinner with a view of Perkins Cove at Oarweed Restaurant. The steamed clams, scallops, and lobster rolls were superb – and I easily could have eaten three more of everything. By the time we’d paid the check, the sun was beginning to set, so we went for a stroll along the water before heading over to Main Street for one more round of drinks before it was time for our designated driver (so appreciated! Thank you, Tracy!) to pile us back into the car for the ride home.
While I really could have slept all day yesterday after getting back home at around 2AM, I did manage to push myself out of bed to make another, albeit much shorter drive North again – this time to Mason, New Hampshire – where my mom, my cousin Paige, her husband Brian and I met at Pickity Place for lunch and an afternoon of shopping, cat-petting and admiring their garden. I had written about Pickity Place last April, and it remains one of my favorite spots for a great, multi-course meal at a reasonable price.
This time around, I had gotten the braised short ribs with Korean barbeque sauce, but it was their cassava cake for dessert that really stole the show! It was so good!
And now today, still full of food and feeling a little sun-kissed, it’s back to work I go! A little later on this week, I’m going to be sharing a Summertime dress I often wear to keep cool (and somewhat fancy) and some long overdue updates on past “Local Loves” locations I’ve written about over the years!
See you all soon!
