It’s been more than a minute since I’ve visited Cape Cod, specifically Hyannis, with my last trip there taking place well before the pandemic started as part of an early Summer getaway weekend with my group of girlfriends. The coastal community, filled with great cafés, shops, historical monuments, museums and of course – plenty of beaches (where I refuse to go in the water given that there’s also a lot of great white sharks swimming off the coast these days!) – is perfect for a day or an extended weekend visit this time of year.
And Hyannis also serves as a hub for those looking to hop on ferries for any of the surrounding islands like Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.
I digress. This past weekend, I took a lengthy scenic route drive to Hyannis for a day of dining, shopping, and checking out the last day of the area’s annual Hydrangea Festival. They’ve been blooming the most beautiful shade of blue this year – and I knew I wanted to snap some photos while I had the time!
Once in town and finding a superb parking spot right on Main Street, I started my day off with a mocha/strawberry latte and smashburger with fries at The Mariner Café, a place I’d first seen when it popped up on my Instagram feed earlier in the month and added it to my “To Do” list when I was making plans to visit the area for the day. Everything tasted phenomenal, and the café itself is spacious, clean, and beautifully decorated with so much cool-looking nautical décor.
After coffee and an early lunch, I strolled Main Street – stopping by places like Little Miss Cupcape, Mrs. Mitchell’s Gifts, Red Fish Blue Fish, etc., where I bought some presents for my mom, my friends, and replaced a piece of my jewelry that had been damaged during a recent beach outing for a great price – so I’m quite pleased!
And although I had been tempted to take a ferry for a guided lighthouse tour during my stay, it was uncomfortably hot out – and being in the sun out on the water for over an hour didn’t seem particularly ideal given my fair complexion. Additionally, the nearby John F. Kennedy Museum is closed on Sundays – so I’m going to have to come back to finally see that one during their normal business hours!
Instead, I checked out an outdoor International Festival and some live music by the Hyannis’ town hall before I set off to see the aforementioned Hydrangeas around the nearby parks and common areas. They were absolutely gorgeous and still in peak-bloom, so I got to snap a few great pictures before it came time to slather on more sunscreen, refill my water bottle, and start to head back home since I had to return to work this morning!
But it was an absolutely lovely day and I’m looking forward to returning to the Cape before the end of the season to see all the things I either didn’t have time for and/or were closed on the weekend!
And I gotta’ grab a lobster roll too, of course!
