Local Loves: Gombo

For as far back as I can remember, since I was a kid, I think- I’ve had a fascination and deep love for New Orleans. The history, the music, the culture and the food. I’d been planning a stay down in Louisiana pre-COVID (that obviously had to be postponed as a result) and am now attempting to work out some dates for a visit that would keep me out of everyone’s way during the impending hurricane season. We’ll see how that goes!

I digress, having a little New Orleans here in New England was/is always an exciting thing for me and anyone else who isn’t afraid of some extra spice in their meals. First, there was my beloved Wells Provisions in Charlemont, who served po’boys and gumbo that people traveled from miles to enjoy every weekend (I know I did as often as I could!)

But, sadly, they closed as of last Fall- only having an occasional but still much-appreciated pop-up from time to time- and my hopes of having a Cajun and Creole-inspired menu within a reasonable driving distance were dashed.

And then Dan brought me to Gombo for the first time. Located right in the heart of downtown Northampton, stepping into this small restaurant is like stepping onto Bourbon Street. There’s an extensive bunch and dinner menu- with plenty jambalaya, boulettes, oysters, etc. Their décor is so beautiful- and they have live jazz music throughout each month. I’m in love!

I recently stopped by for their Sunday brunch to grab a mimosa and some chicken and sweet potato waffles that came highly recommended- and I was not disappointed (I never am!) Their space looked especially beautiful as the sunshine poured in- and I couldn’t stop staring at their trumpet light fixtures.

And of course their staff are always absolutely lovely!

A word of advice though. They do not take reservations- so if you’re thinking of grabbing Sunday brunch or dropping in to grab a drink and listen to some jazz- get there early! They tend to fill up fast!
