This has been an extraordinarily fun and busy January so far, which always feels like the longest month of the year. Not that I’m complaining, of course- because I’ve been enjoying as much of it as I possibly can! But, I also know when I need to take an occasional self-care time out and spend a morning or afternoon doing absolutely nothing strenuous or requiring too much mental or emotional focus in what I call “The Cozy Reset.” These are especially important to me during the colder, darker months when I can feel a little tired or burnt out more often.
One of the perks with the schedule I have at my job is that once a week I get a half day- meaning that at noon I can log out, unplug, and have an entire afternoon to do whatever I want- be it running errands, going to appointments, treating myself to a latte or taking a day trip somewhere- like a park, museum, a movie or a trail. I don’t have to answer phone calls, e-mails, attend Zoom meetings, etc.
So given the recent snowstorms, downpours, and high winds- this past week’s designated half day seemed like the perfect time to have “The Cozy Reset.” I worked from home in my pajamas, cooked myself good food, and when I was done with my office-related tasks for the day- I closed my blinds, lit a coffee-scented candle, applied some skincare (and a hair mask for good measure!) and just lounged while binge-watching some comfort shows and stand-up comedy specials until it was time to meal prep for the next day and get ready for bed.
And while I typically like doing something- anything! – on my days off and half days since I don’t want to waste any of my free time, the reset was just what I needed to feel refreshed and recharged for what I’ve got planned in the coming weeks ahead. Especially because I know I’m going to be just as busy in February as I have been this month.
I’ve been trying to teach myself not to feel guilty or ashamed for having a “Do Nothing Day” every once in a while, which is a hard habit to break because I don’t like feeling lazy or like I’m being wasteful or squandering my time in any way- but I’ve realized in the past few years (especially during the pandemic) how important they can be to your overall mental, emotional and physical health. You need to rest sometimes, and that’s perfectly okay!
I had wanted to try and have “The Cozy Reset” at least once a month if my schedule and commitments permit it, but we’ll see. I’m just grateful I got to have one for January. It doesn’t always get to happen!
If you’ve got recommendations or want to share what you do on a “Do Nothing Day,” feel free to comment or message me! I’m always looking for new ways to relax, unwind, and shut my brain off for a bit!
