I was planning on writing about this adorable and historic little spot at some point in the Fall, since both it’s exterior and interior just scream “cozy season” that are perfect for coffee in a warm sweater on a rainy day or post-pumpkin picking relaxation with friends- but when I found myself driving through Harvard, Massachusetts and stopping here to grab a lemonade and a quick bite to eat earlier this week- I knew I had to write about it sooner rather than later.
Established in 1896, the Harvard General Store is a café, package store, event space and time capsule all rolled into one. With a long history and many different owners over the years, movie-fanatics may recognize it (and the surrounding buildings) as the backdrop in multiple scenes from Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of ‘Little Women.’
The General Store offers various types of coffees/teas, a full all-day breakfast and lunch menu, a pizza parlor, and locally sourced goods and gifts along with custom bakery order options and both weekly & monthly music and art events.
The building is beautiful from the outside, of course- but the inside is so warm and welcoming- and I always enjoy my time there whenever I have a chance to sit, unwind and savor a latte or a sandwich while browsing their assortment of candles, décor, and books for sale.
And sure, their outdoor dining/seating area borders a historic cemetery- but Halloween will be here before we know it- so it’s not that weird!
I ended up picking up a pumpkin bread loaf during my most recent visit (the rain had me feeling a very Fall-esque way!) and it has been absolutely delicious. I was also eying a mozzarella and tomato focaccia flatbread that I know I’ll be trying the next time I visit- which I hope will be very, very soon!
