Pottery, Paints and Beating the Heat…

Although the forecast for this week called for non-stop rain and thunderstorms to carry us into the first days of July 2023, no one seemed prepared for the unbearable levels of humidity that came with it- or how stifling that humidity was in the sporadic periods of sunshine when we all collectively tried to run errands or move forward with plans. My hair is huge, my air conditioner is on full blast with minimal relief, and I am sticking to every surface my bare legs or exposed back come into contact with.

Summer in New England, y’all!

I digress. This past weekend my cousin Paige and her husband Brian invited both me and my mother to sit somewhere cool and participate in a stress-relieving, relaxation-boosting activity for a few hours in Leominster, Massachusetts. And so, with iced coffees in tow- we met them at Art on the Rocks for an afternoon of pottery painting.

AotR also offers pottery-making classes, painting classes, and themed events for different holidays and occasions- but we kept it simple with choosing pre-made ceramic pieces and decorating them however we wanted after a quick tutorial on the different types of paint and finishes. Paige chose a gnome/fairy house, Brian chose a frog and flamingo ornament for their home, and my mom chose a floral-patterned bowl.

Meanwhile, I chose a cactus/desert-themed jewelry dish to keep in my apartment- opting to cover it in both green and sand-hued paint that will dry to a glittery, shiny finish when it gets heated up (although you probably can’t tell from the before photos!)

It was super fun- and Paige is going to pick up our finished pieces in one week- which is the turnaround time for projects to be warmed up in the oven, cooled, and packaged up for transport. I’m excited to see how mine comes out!

Afterwards, the four of us headed over to The GazBar for dinner (and some seriously cute drinks) before it was time to head home and prepare for the upcoming work week.

I’m excited to share some of my monthly favorites in the days ahead, as well as take a look back on June in all it’s loveliness before we head into a brand new month this coming weekend!

Stay tuned!
