Sailing, Stormy Skies and Seals…

On any normal day, if I were to wake up and see rain clouds/stormy skies overhead and all over the forecast- I can’t say my first reaction would be “time to get on a boat!” I’d probably opt to do something indoors, instead. Catch a movie? Read a book? Binge the new season of ‘I Think You Should Leave’ again? All perfectly acceptable options!

But my friend Sean and I had made plans to catch the early Saturday morning ferry out of Boston Seaport to the tip of Massachusetts’ distinctive “hook” shape for a day of food, shopping and sight-seeing. I’m talking, of course, about Provincetown! I haven’t been since I was a little kid, but had come across a few locations in town of interest via social media that I had really wanted to check out and experience.

And given that Sean has spent time there over the years as part of their thriving LGBTQIA+ community and with it being Pride Month- I knew he’d be down for a day trip together!

Although there were still a lot of people around town- in the shops, cafés and streets- I think the on and off torrential downpours actually kept most residents and visitors inside for most of the day. We got to dine in places like The Lobster Pot and The Grilled Cheese Gallery without having to wait for long periods of time- and browse galleries, art alleys and shops like MATE, Provincetown Fudge Factory and Ball Beachwear with ease.

And when the weather cleared up, albeit temporarily, Sean and I headed down to the water to brave the causeway- a boulder-lined bridge that stretches out from Provincetown to the farthest trip of Massachusetts (where a lone lighthouse sits.) I hadn’t anticipated hiking a couple of miles during our trip and wasn’t really wearing proper footwear- but Sean held my hand to help me across some of the trickier areas until we reached the marsh and beaches on the other side.

And it was so worth it! Not only was the view of the ocean incredible, but we saw so many seals swimming around and popping their heads up to look at us while we were looking at shells and sea glass along the coast. It was such a great experience that it gave me the strength to get back over the causeway and back to the docks where Sean and I had to catch our ferry back to Boston at the end of our adventure,

And even though I’m a little sore from all the rock climbing, and my tan lines are a little more prominent from the sporadic sunshine I had throughout my day- it was such an amazing trip and I cannot wait to head back to do some more exploring! There were so many places I made little mental “to-do” notes for the next time I’m in town!

Thank you so much to Sean for coming with me and making sure I didn’t fall into the ocean, and for the locals who gave us recommendations and friendly smiles as we all crossed paths during the day!
