For our first dinner of 2026 last Thursday night, Troy had graciously left the decision making up to me, knowing that I had been carefully researching both our activity and dining options prior to our departure to Portland, Maine and that I had a couple of ideas in mind of where I wanted to go to celebrate the evening of New Year’s Day after we’d been out in the snow for most of the morning and afternoon.
And knowing that we can both eat our collective body weights in sushi until we are physically restrained and forced to stop – I made us a reservation at Mr. Tuna on the corner of Middle and Franklin Street – just a short walk from our hotel!
Established in 2017, Mr. Tuna was yet another highly recommended place to check out by friends, family and some of my colleagues that frequent the area. Their selection of hand rolls, maki rolls, sashimi, cocktails and sake is unbelievably extensive and made so fresh. We wanted to have a bit of everything.
Our server, Jamie, was very sweet and fun, and gave us some great feedback on what we should try throughout our stay. I sipped on a Mrs. Tuna margarita while we sat by the counter and devoured spicy salmon, mango tuna, Maine crab, a Tuna de Tigre bowl and so much more – but the real gemstone on an already great menu were the ice cream toasties (which were like deep-fried ice cream sandwiches topped with sea salt.) Troy and I took one bite of them and then looked at each other in disbelief before debating ordering several more. They were amazing!
I would and absolutely will revisit Mr. Tuna the next time I’m in Portland. It’s a small, cozy spot in a bustling downtown area with some of the best sushi and service I’ve ever had – and I highly recommend going to experience their menu for yourself if you’re in town.
And, if you can, definitely try to book a table during one of their upcoming Tuna & Friends events, where guest chefs from all over North America drop by to share and create unique dishes for patrons to try out. The events/dinners are running now through June!
