A Taste of the Tropics…

I love a good birthday celebration, whether it’s my own or for any of my friends and family – and both planning and participating in dinners, parties and outings for the people I care about most in this life is one of my favorite things to do. Luckily, April is filled with birthdays – particularly in the first few days – so I’ve been quite busy these past couple of weeks!

I had mentioned earlier this week that last Friday had been spent with Dan for a belated-birthday afternoon in Keene, New Hampshire. When we weren’t popping into some of the cutest little shops on the Main Street loop, we were grabbing slices of the best woodfired pizza and cocktails I’ve had in a long time over at Fireworks. Their ‘Bella Notte’ pizza was life-changing to the point where we almost ordered another one just to experience it again.

And since no birthday is complete without cake and ice cream, we headed directly across the street to Eat More Cake for some fresh gelato and cupcakes. Their décor was absolutely lovely – but their desserts really stole the show. Everything was delicious and clearly made with love, fun and creativity.

On Sunday, it was my friend Stef’s turn to celebrate her belated birthday. After scooping up our friend Jackie in Worcester, we made the short drive to Danielson, Connecticut to check out Stef’s favorite greenhouse – Logee’s – who specialize in unique and tropical plants. I’d never been before, so it was quite an adventure!

Out of the three of us, Jackie is whom I’d consider to be the expert green thumb, and she wasted no time in stocking up on different plans and ferns. I kept it simple, grabbing a couple of Venus Fly Trap plants and some smaller, easy-to-care-for potted flowers for both my mother and myself – but there were quite a few things I definitely would go back for (like a lemon tree!) if I could make room in my apartment for them.

Afterwards, we made a quick drive over to Putnam, Connecticut to grab brunch at The Hare & The Hound, where I had an incredible fig jam, goat cheese and roasted apple sandwich that I absolutely want to find a recipe for so I can try my hand at making it at home. It was divine!

This weekend is, thankfully, shaping up to be a little calmer. Troy is flying in for a visit next week so I think the next couple of days will be spent stocking up on groceries and picking up some gifts for his stay. I’m so excited to have him here – and I’m sure I’ll have plenty of photos and updates to share from what we have planned together.

That being said – enjoy your weekend, everyone!
