What do you do when you need to drive to the Canadian border (and back!) within the same day to complete a Global Entry interview for upcoming international travel, but you and your friend are absolutely famished by the time you’re done getting fingerprinted and photographed for Customs and the closest Tim Hortons is already closed?
Well, thanks to the help of two of the nicest and funniest border agents ever – I can confirm that you go to The Tavern on The Hill for dinner before embarking on the very long journey back home!
This past Wednesday, I had cut out of work early to begin the nearly three hour drive to the Canadian border for a Global Entry appointment since the location in Derby, Vermont was the closest location to me that had availability before I’m scheduled to travel in early May. Dan had come with me so that I wouldn’t have to make the expedition alone (and also to snap some photos at the border!) – and the trip all but flew by with the exception of a period of heavy rain and fog that made traveling through the mountains and a whole lot of vast wilderness a little jarring.
We reached the border just after dark, and briefly crossed into Canada for my appointment where I was greeted by two absolutely lovely and hilarious agents who made the whole thing a breeze. When they heard how far we’d traveled, and how far we still had to get home, they began recommending some nearby food options for us since it was pretty obvious we were very, very hungry by then!
One of those places was The Tavern on The Hill in Newport, Vermont – just a couple miles away from the border in Vermont and a place frequented by locals – which sounded perfect!
Nestled inside what looks like an every day house from the road, The Tavern operates as a pub – serving daily specials, beers on tap and cocktails. Dan and I shared some wings and poutine fries (of course!) while he tried out one of their sandwiches, which he gave two thumbs up afterwards.
Everyone there was super nice and the atmosphere was really chilled and relaxed, and I can absolutely see myself stopping there again the next time I’m making my way back from visiting our neighbors to the North!
And now that my Global Entry and TSA Pre-Check are all set – I can finally share more details about where I’m going in the weeks ahead!
Stay tuned!
