Lunch in the Mountains…

I can’t remember the last time I had made the drive up to Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. Nestled amid mountains, rivers, waterfalls and railways – it’s a beautiful location any time of year – and I want to say I had last ventured North for a weekend stay years ago during the very last days of Winter/beginning of Spring for a couple of days of snowshoeing and ziplining since there are also quite a few recreational locations in the area.

But the biggest draw to Bretton Woods would have to be the massive, looming Mount Washington Hotel – a sprawling and all-inclusive property with various restaurants, bars, shops, pools/spas, golf courses and gardens within it’s interior and a short walking distance outside – and all with an unobstructed view of Mount Washington. It’s also rumored to have been Stephen King’s inspiration for ‘The Shining,’ although I think he may have disputed that at one point when asked about it.

I’ve stayed there a couple of times in the past, and have had such lovely and relaxing visits – but I have not had the opportunity to return since well before the pandemic began. That was until this last weekend, anyway – when Dan and I decided to drop by the area for lunch and some sightseeing before he had to go to work in the evening and I had to prepare for a busy week ahead!

Right now, the hotel is as breathtaking as ever – with fresh flowers everywhere and the outdoor pool open for guests. Dan and I walked around the porch that wraps all the way around the hotel, checked out some of the shops located below the lobby (and made mental notes to return to visit their speakeasy bar in the future when we have more time to stay a bit longer!) and finally grabbed some fantastic whipped feta and burgers/sandwiches at Stickney’s Steakhouse where we were lucky enough to snag an outdoor seat overlooking the garden and nearby mountain range.

Dan had never been to the hotel before, and he took some absolutely gorgeous photos (including some for an upcoming outfit post I’ll be sharing later on this week!) so I’m really glad he got to see it – even if it was only just for a couple of hours!

I’m hoping to return to Bretton Woods again at some point in the Fall, since the foliage should be spectacular in the area by then – and I may even book a spa treatment and an overnight visit when I do!
