It was only a matter of time, but we’ve come up on the last couple of days of my extended West Coast journey. In a little over 24 hours I’ll be boarding a plane back to New England to ride out the remainder of my vacation before it’s time to return to work, colder weather, and a significantly less-layered wardrobe. I wish I could stay in California for so much longer- but my friends, family, and especially my dog- are starting to miss me!
Last Wednesday, I returned to San Diego with Troy for an afternoon that began in La Jolla for his job and ended with a brief stop in Old Town- which has been decorated so beautifully and elaborately for the upcoming Dia De Los Muertos. I had an absolute blast shopping and snapping photos of towering skeletons, brightly colored flowers and tributes to loved ones who have departed before us. I think the displays will be up through the end of the month- and they’re worth checking out if you’re in the area! I love Old Town so, so much.
In keeping up with our Tiki bar/pirate-themed outings since we visited Strong Water in Anaheim last weekend, Troy and I have made it our mission while I’m here to visit a couple more popular watering holes that are appropriately decorated for the Halloween season/holiday. The first, The Lost Inferno– is a ‘Goonies’ themed bar located in San Clemente that we stopped by on Thursday night.
The décor and the drinks were spot-on, and it was there that we met and got to know Peter- the best bartender!- who encouraged us to stop by for brunch at the bar’s sister location in Tustin, STOWAWAY. We headed there on Saturday morning for the most delicious pulled pork sliders, pasta salad and passion fruit mimosas- all while snapping selfies in the skull cave sitting area or marveling at their mugs (some of which are limited edition and are for sale!)
But of course, the big event from last week was Friday night’s Death Cab For Cutie/The Postal Service show at Hollywood Bowl- which quickly became one of my favorite outdoor venues of all time. The show was pure magic, especially since ‘Transatlanticism’ and ‘Give Up’ were such important and meaningful albums to me and my friends when they were released twenty years ago (!!!) Being able to sing along to every song with thousands of other people who were also in the moment and in their feelings was unforgettable.
I openly cried more than once, in a good way, and I’m so thankful Troy had bought us tickets at the end of last year (the tickets were for my birthday!) I love and cherish him so, so much.
A little later on this week, I’ll be sharing a post dedicated entirely to a day trip I took to one of the most fun and unique roadside attractions out in the desert- and then it’ll be back to my usual and spooky Massachusetts content again!
See you all soon!
