I had every intention of sharing the details of my Memorial Day Weekend last Friday, but I’m sure many people know how plans can change at the last minute or things can pop up unexpectedly in life! In my case, it was impromptu plans with Troy while he was visiting for the week- including attending his niece’s graduation and Senior Awards Night at my old high school!
But I’ll get into that shortly!
Last weekend, as I was coming off of the sinus infection and touch of sun poisoning I talked about in my last post– Troy and I decided some fresh air and salt water would be the best cure-all for any residual aches/pains and congestion. Within an hour of reaching the New Hampshire state line I was feeling energized and fantastic again- especially given how warm and sunny the weather was throughout the entire weekend!
I brought Troy to Kooks in Rye to take in their cocktails, tacos and laid-back surfer aesthetic for the first time since they just opened for the Summer 2023 season and he had never been there before. The road trip was actually Troy’s first New England Coastal Community experience overall- which was one of the major reasons we decided to go in the first place. While nearly all of my Summers have been spent in places like Hampton, Rye, Cape Cod and Maine since I was a kid- his childhood was vastly different (he’s a Berkshires Boy!)
I offered to show him around a few places- and was so happy he agreed to come along.
After Rye, we headed further up north to Old Orchard Beach in Maine where we found an adorable ocean-side room via Waves Oceanfront Resort. The room was a short walking distance from the historic pier, multiple bars/restaurants and the Palace Playland amusement park/arcade- so naturally we grabbed some food and played a ton of skee-ball while watching the sun set behind the boardwalk.
On Monday, for Memorial Day- we remained in Old Orchard Beach for most of the day, grabbing breakfast at Café 64 and watching the local parade before heading into the perpetually chilly Atlantic for a quick dip. From there, it was back home by following the coast for as long as we could before we had to head back to remote work bright and early on Tuesday morning.
And although my short work week was pretty uneventful, with stops in Northampton for post-work pizza and martinis, things picked back up again on Thursday night when Troy and I headed back to our old high school in Central Massachusetts (where we first met and became friends many, many years ago!) to celebrate his niece receiving an achievement award- which then led into her actual high school graduation on Friday night. It was great spending time with Troy’s family and so surreal being back in my former school.
I haven’t been there since my own graduation, and it’s changed so much over the years!
With Saturday being Troy’s last full day on the East Coast- we kept it simple and local- with brunch at Wells Provisions, visiting his friends’ apothecary in Great Barrington, and a stop in Lee to see family and grab dinner at one of our favorite spots- 51 Park.
Troy flew back to California yesterday morning, and I’m back to work today- albeit reluctantly! It was great having him home for a few days and I’m looking forward to when he comes back (or when I head back to Orange County!)
With my schedule and health on track again, I’ve got a lot of posts in the coming days/weeks ahead to share that I’m really excited to jump into- including some seasonal recipes and a few local spots I’m finally getting around to writing about!
I’m officially ready for June!
